AI keyboard or ChatGPT? Choose based on where your message lives

Use a keyboard action for a small change in the message you are writing. Use ChatGPT for a new draft, a longer discussion, or research.

An AI keyboard and a chat assistant can both change text, but they fit different moments.

The short answer If the message is already in Mail, Messages, Notes, or a form, a keyboard action can change it in place. If you still need ideas, structure, or a full draft, open a chat assistant.

Start with the message, not the tool

Imagine that you are replying to a friend:

Draft I can bring dessert, but I’ll arrive 晚一点.

The message already has its meaning. You may only want to make it sound smoother. Leaving the conversation, copying the text into another app, explaining the task, and pasting the result back adds several steps to a small edit.

Now imagine that you need to plan a long email about a change of travel plans. You have not decided what to say yet. A chat assistant gives you room to explore several versions and add background.

The difference is the size of the job.

When a keyboard action fits

Use an in-place action when:

  • the text is already in the app where you will send it;
  • you want to convert a short mixed-language part;
  • you want to polish a sentence without changing its meaning;
  • you want to understand one unfamiliar phrase before replying.

UnimeType provides three user-triggered actions: Convert, Polish, and Explain. Nothing needs to happen merely because the keyboard is open; the action starts when you choose it. See Actions and Privacy.

When a chat assistant fits

Use ChatGPT or another chat assistant when:

  • you need a new draft rather than a small change;
  • you want several alternatives;
  • the task needs research, planning, or a long conversation;
  • you need to combine information from several sources.

A chat window is useful space for thinking. A keyboard is useful when the thought is already written and the next action is clear.

A simple comparison

Your current stateBetter starting point
“I have one sentence and want it to sound natural.”Polish in place
“I typed a mostly English message with one romanized phrase.”Convert the relevant text
“I do not understand one phrase in the reply.”Explain the selected phrase
“I need to decide what the whole email should say.”Chat assistant
“I need an outline, research, or several drafts.”Chat assistant

Keep the text boundary visible

Both tools may send selected text to a network service when you ask them to process it. Before using either one:

  1. select only the text needed for the task;
  2. remove passwords, recovery phrases, and information you are not allowed to share;
  3. check the result before sending it;
  4. use a human specialist for medical, legal, financial, or certified translation.

Decision rule

Already written + small change: use a keyboard action. Not written yet + open-ended work: use a chat assistant.

Neither tool needs to replace the other.
