AI keyboard or ChatGPT? Choose based on where your message lives

You have a reply open in Mail and one phrase needs work. That is an editing task. You have not decided what a longer email should say. That is a drafting task.

An AI keyboard and a chat assistant can both process text, but the state of the message tells you which one to open.

The message is already written

Imagine that you are replying to a friend:

I can bring dessert, but I’ll arrive 晚一点.

The meaning is already there. You might want to convert the mixed-language phrase, smooth the sentence, or understand a phrase in the reply. Copying the message into another app, explaining the request, and pasting the result back adds several steps to a small edit.

You are still deciding what to say

Now suppose you need a long email about changed travel plans. You want to work out the structure, compare several versions, or bring in information from other sources. A chat assistant gives that discussion its own space.

Start with a chat assistant when you need:

• a new draft rather than an edit;
• several alternatives;
• research or planning;
• a longer conversation about the result.

Choose from the current state

This is not a contest between tools. A keyboard action handles a bounded change inside the app where the message lives. A chat assistant handles work that is still open ended.

Check the text before processing it

Either kind of tool may send the text you ask it to process to a network service. Select only what the task needs, and remove passwords, recovery phrases, or information you are not allowed to share. Read the result before sending it.
